We have begun getting the back yard of the new house ready for a garden. This weekend we planted three colummar apple trees, raspberries, blueberries, kiwi, grape and strawberry. There are more blueberries and strawberries that need to go into the ground. Upon putting the first shovel into the ground I became worried. The "soil" is comprised of heavy clay mixed with 1-5" river rocks... NOT COOL. In another spot in the yard I found buried particle board, rope and who knows what else. Yet another attempt to dig found what seems to be cement 4" below the surface. All of this makes me think the best idea is to get a bucket loader and dig out the first two feet of soil and replace it with something a bit better. I'm now worried that my soil is a little more than contaminated... Glad I decided to go with raised beds for most of my garden...

I remember the first couple years at the old house... I guess I'm going to have to do a lot of tilling and adding of organic matter... If the soil kills what I've planted thus far I'll know immediate attention is required.

Starting from scratch at the new house seems like the perfect time for me to begin a new garden zine. The last record of my garden never got published, so maybe this one will.

In addition to digging in the dirt Rob and I skated today. We managed to get up to Battle Ground and then to the East Vancouver park. Battle Ground is tons of fun, skating some street can be fun! It was the first time at the East Vancouver park for us and it is pretty burly. The deep bowl is like butter, so fast and smooth, yet this full-pipe with a capsule at the end kept getting in my way. Even with my lack of skill the deep end was tons of fun. The medium bowl was a bit harder to get the hang of, tight transitions minimal flat, narrow decks and lots of corners = crazy! The street area is a nice "beginner" street area and I really liked it. Being a beginner and all.

Lastly, on Friday I took the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test. I scored perfectly! My color ego is now hugely inflated due to my Hue perfection. Other than being able to approve color I'm not sure what other use my highly color tuned eyes are good for...
